What makes a good referral partner?

A good referral partner serves the same customers you do at a different point in their journey, responds quickly, does work you are willing to stake your reputation on, and tells you what happened. Reciprocity matters less than reliability — a partner who sends few referrals but handles every one well is worth more than a prolific one who lets them rot.

The qualifying traits

Shared customers, different service. The overlap must be in who they serve, not what they sell, or you are competitors dressed as partners.

Speed. Response time is the trait that most reliably predicts whether referrals convert, and it is visible within the first two or three you send.

Work you would vouch for. You are lending your credibility with every introduction, and you get it back damaged if the customer has a bad experience.

Closes the loop. A partner who tells you what happened lets you improve what you send them. One who does not leaves you referring blind indefinitely.

Reciprocity is the wrong first metric

Strict reciprocity is a poor test because referral opportunity is rarely symmetrical. A conveyancing solicitor encounters far more moving customers than a moving company encounters conveyancing needs — expecting equal counts punishes the partner for the shape of their business.

Judge instead on whether they act on what you send. A partner who receives ten and converts six has given you more than one who returns ten and converts none.

Reciprocity does matter over long horizons. A partner who has received sustained referrals for two years and sent nothing is not a partner.

The warning signs

Slow or no acknowledgement. If referrals sit unanswered for days, the customers you send will notice before you do.

Declines without reasons. It signals either no process or no interest, and it means you cannot correct what you are sending.

Complaints from customers you referred. One is information; two is a pattern and a decision.

Pressure to refer volume rather than fit. A partner optimising for count will accept referrals they cannot serve, and your customer pays for it.

Ending it

Say so directly and stop sending. Letting a partnership decay silently leaves the partner expecting referrals that will not arrive, and occasionally still telling customers they work with you.
