How do I find referral partners?

Find referral partners by working backwards from your existing customers: ask who they used before you and who they will need after. Those businesses already have your future customers and a reason to talk to them. That list is more productive than any directory search, because it is built from real purchasing sequences rather than category adjacency.

Ask your customers, not a directory

Your last twenty customers can each name two or three businesses they engaged around the same time as you. Aggregate those answers and the genuinely adjacent categories appear, ranked by how often they came up.

This method surfaces partners that category reasoning misses, and it comes with a warm introduction attached: the customer who named the business can often make it.

Qualify before you invest

Serves the same customers, at a compatible price point, in the same area. A partner whose customers cannot afford you will refer people who never convert, which feels like a productive relationship for months.

Does work you would be comfortable being associated with. Every referral you send stakes your own reputation on their performance.

Has capacity. A partner with a three-month backlog will sit on your referrals, and the customer will blame you for the introduction.

The first approach

Lead with a referral if you have one. It converts a cold approach into an obvious conversation and demonstrates you understand their business.

If you do not have one yet, ask about their customers rather than describing your own services. You are trying to find out whether the fit is real, and a pitch does not tell you that.

Be explicit about what you are proposing. Vague relationship-building produces vague outcomes; "I think I could send you two or three of these a month, and here is what I would want back" produces a decision.

Where to look beyond your customers

Structured referral chapters, which exist to assemble complementary businesses and let you meet several at once.

Trade bodies serving the adjacent profession rather than your own — you are the interesting outsider there rather than one of many competitors.

The businesses already working alongside you on current jobs, who have the advantage of having seen your work directly.

MyReferral.systems is a referral network where local businesses hold a category seat, pass referrals to each other, and track every one from introduction through to closed business.
