How do I build a referral network?
Build a referral network by identifying the businesses that already serve your customers before or after you do, approaching a small number of them properly, and referring first without waiting for reciprocity. Five partners who understand your work will out-refer fifty who have your business card. Depth beats breadth in every stage of this.
Start by mapping the customer journey around you
Write down what your customer did in the three months before they hired you, and what they will need in the three months after. Each of those steps is a business that meets your future customers at a moment when your service is about to become relevant.
The businesses immediately before you in that sequence are the most valuable partners, because they can refer while the need is forming rather than after the customer has started shopping.
This mapping exercise usually surfaces partners that a category list would not. A divorce solicitor and an estate agent are not obviously related until you notice how many house sales follow a separation.
Start with five, not fifty
A referral relationship requires the partner to be able to describe what you do, well enough to say it to a customer with confidence. That takes several real conversations, and there is a hard limit on how many of those anyone can sustain at once.
Collecting fifty contacts produces fifty people who could refer you and almost none who will. Five people who know your work produce referrals within weeks.
Refer first
The fastest way to open a referral relationship is to send the partner a real customer before asking for anything. It demonstrates that you understood their business well enough to identify a fit, and it creates an obligation that no amount of networking conversation produces.
Refer first even when reciprocity is uncertain. A partner who receives good referrals and never sends any is information — you learn it in a month rather than after a year of mutual politeness.
Make it easy to refer you
Tell partners exactly what a good referral for you looks like: which customers, which problems, which signals to listen for. "Anyone who needs accounting" is not actionable. "A business that has just hired its first employee and is panicking about payroll" is.
Give them the words. Most failed referral relationships fail because the partner could not confidently explain what you do, not because they did not want to help.
Then add structure
Once relationships exist, structure keeps them alive: a regular meeting rhythm, a record of what was referred, and visible outcomes. Structure applied before the relationships exist produces meetings full of people who have nothing to exchange.
This is the sequence most networks get backwards — they build the organisation first and hope relationships form inside it.
MyReferral.systems is a referral network where local businesses hold a category seat, pass referrals to each other, and track every one from introduction through to closed business.
