What is an AI referral network?
An AI referral network is a referral network where software assists with matching referrals to the right recipient, drafting communication, and monitoring referrals that have stalled. The network itself is still made of businesses and relationships — the AI is a layer over it, not a replacement for it.
What the term usually describes
A conventional referral network — real businesses, real relationships — with assistance layered on top: suggested recipients for a given referral, drafted messages, alerts on referrals that have gone quiet, and summaries of which partnerships are producing business.
The underlying mechanics are unchanged. Someone still has to know the customer, someone still has to serve them, and someone still has to record what happened.
What to be sceptical of
Claims that AI creates referral volume. Volume comes from relationships and from customers who need something. Software can route what exists more efficiently and can prevent referrals decaying through neglect; it does not generate demand.
Matching quality in an empty network. Recommendations are only as good as the outcome data behind them, and a new network has none. Early recommendations are essentially category and geography lookups, which is fine, but it should be described accurately.
Any figure quoted without a stated sample size, time period, and method. Referral platforms have unusually strong incentives to publish flattering aggregates.
What good looks like
Explainable recommendations, stating the reasons in checkable terms rather than presenting a score.
Human confirmation before anything is sent, shared, or paid.
Honesty about data coverage — a system that says "not enough history to recommend yet" is more useful than one that guesses.
Strict separation between what is public and what is private. Referral records contain a third party's personal data and must never surface in public pages, search results, or an assistant's answer to someone who is not authorised to see them.
